DMI

Frequently-Asked-Questions about DMI
DMI stands for Database Mailer Interface.

Q: How is the cost of DMI service calculated?

A: There is a monthly maintenance fee of $99.

In addition there is a mailing fee of $0.10 per MB of mail. Both size of the message and number of recipients factor into the mailing fee. Here are some examples:

Message size = 20k, a typical HTML message
Number of recipients = 1,000
Total Mailing = 20MB
Cost = $2.00
Message size = 2k, a large text-only message
Number of recipients = 10,000
Total Mailing = 20MB
Cost = $2.00
Message size = 200k, a large HTML message
Number of recipients = 10,000
Total Mailing = 2000MB
Cost = $200.00

Invoices are sent on the 1st of each month by email. Cost is calculated from all mailings sent during the previous month plus the maintenance fee. The maintenance fee applies even if you do no mailings during the month.

Q: Is there a setup fee for DMI service?

A: Yes. There is a $100 setup fee/deposit required before the account is created. It is our policy to debit this deposit for each complaint we receive from your recipients. The amount debited will range from $10 for minor complaints to the entire balance for a major infraction/complaint. When the deposit is exhausted, the account will be terminated unless there are extenuating circumstances.

Q: Why is my account limited to 1000 recipients? How can I have that limit raised?

A: New accounts are limited to a maximum of 1000 recipients per mailing. This is done to prevent abuse by less-than-reputable clients. Every email you send must go only to people who willingly accept email from you. If your mailings generate complaints, the account will be closed and you forfeit your deposit.

If your mailings generate no complaints, you may request the limit be raised to accommodate larger recipient lists.

Q: How do I upload a recipient list?

A: The minimum requirement for a recipient list is email address. In other words, you can manually paste in a list of addresses, or you can upload a text file of addresses, one address per line. No additional information is required, but is optional (see next question).

Q: How do I insert variables into my messages?

A: To include variables in your mailings, you must:

  1. Upload a tab-delimited list of recipients. In addition to the email address, each recipient record must contain the variables which will be swapped into the message, in tab-delimited format. The email address must always be the first entry on each line, followed by any optional tab-delimited fields.

  2. Insert variable names in your message. The variable names are #field1#, #field2#, etc. up to #field9#. As the mailing is generated, each will be replaced by the corresponding value from each record.

See the sample DMI interface (link above) for examples.

Q: Does DataBack validate the recipient data which I upload?

A: If you upload a file of recipient addresses, the email addresses are checked for syntax validity and duplicates. Only valid records (valid email addresses) are included. Also any previous un-subscribes or bounces are removed.

If you manually insert a list of addresses, or manually edit records into the uploaded file, those are NOT validated but are accepted as entered.

Q: Can DMI replace my DBMailer mailing list(s)?

A: Maybe. Maybe not. Please compare the two services here to see which is right for you.

DBMailer DMI
$25/month plus $3 per 1000 mailing fee. $99/month plus .10 per MB mailing fee.
Automatic subscribe/unsubscribe process managed by subscribers themselves. Requires that you manage your local database to add or remove people as requested.
No personalization of messages. Messages can be personalized with up to nine fields from your database.
No mailing to subsets of the list. Extract subsets for mailings from your database using any criteria you wish.
To send a mailing, you simply upload the message. To send a mailing you must upload both the message and the recipient list exported from your database.
Bounces are automatically purged from the mailing list. Bounces must be manually removed from your database.
Subscriber "database" resides on our server. Database resides on your computer.

Q: Can I send HTML email? Plain-text email? Attachments?

A: You can send either formatted email (HTML) or plain text. You can not send attachments via DMI (but sending attachments to a list is a bad idea anyway).

Q: Will I be notified whenever someone opts out of my mailings?

A: When someone clicks the "Unsubscribe" link in a DMI mailing, their address is immediately added to a "no-send-list" for your account and no further mailings will go to that address even if you include it in an upload. Copies of all such unsubscribe requests are emailed to the DMI account owner also, so that you may update your database.

Q: How often can I send mailings?

A: As often as every hour. However only one mailing can be scheduled at a time.
